Why Adult ARFID Treatment Feels Stuck — What Clinicians Are Missing in Care

A thought-provoking learning opportunity for providers ready to make important shifts that can change how stalled progress in adult ARFID care is understood and supported.

“Just desensitize yourself to new foods” isn’t an effective treatment for ARFID. When progress stalls, the problem isn’t you or your client—it’s the limitations of exposure-only models and the myth of motivation.

Are you noticing gaps in how we treat adult ARFID?

Adult ARFID care is often approached through frameworks that prioritize food exposure and increasing dietary variety. When progress stalls, or when individuals are unable to incorporate new foods or expand their dietary variety at the expected pace, clinicians are frequently encouraged to intensify exposure or interpret limited change as a lack of motivation.

Yet many providers working with adults quickly discover that these explanations do not fully account for what is happening in the therapeutic process. When intervention models are experienced as overwhelming, rigid, or misaligned with a person’s lived experience, the work of eating can become even less accessible!

This course is for providers who are noticing these patterns and are ready to explore new ideas and tools to support adults with ARFID.

What you will learn

  • Understand why exposure-only approaches in ARFID treatment can plateau and why they may not always be the most appropriate starting point in care.

  • Examine how repeated exposure can sometimes reinforce distress or harm when applied without attention to context, history, and safety.

  • Differentiate between “lack of motivation” and protective responses shaped by past feeding experiences, shame, or treatment fatigue.

  • Recognize how long-standing patterns around food can develop as adaptive strategies rather than simple resistance to change.

  • Identify common clinical situations where traditional ARFID treatment approaches may fail to create meaningful progress.

  • Reconsider how clinicians conceptualize stalled progress in adult ARFID treatment and explore alternative ways of understanding these challenges.

  • Gain tools to support clients in ways that honour their capacity, foster relational safety, and create conditions where nourishment becomes more accessible and sustainable.

What you can expect during the webinar

This webinar invites clinicians to critically examine why adult ARFID treatment can feel stuck and to explore two common challenges that frequently arise in practice: the plateau of exposure-based approaches and the misinterpretation of stalled progress as a motivation problem.

We will explore how exposure therapy came to occupy such a central role in ARFID treatment, examine its historical roots, and consider why it often fails to address the complex realities many adults with ARFID experience.

While exposure can be a useful tool in some contexts, relying on it as a primary solution can reduce an incredibly complex feeding challenge to an overly simplistic intervention.

We will also discuss how burnout and inaccessible treatment demands can shape engagement with care, and why longstanding food patterns often represent adaptive strategies rather than simple resistance to change.

Through a strength-based and person-centered lens, clinicians will be invited to reconsider how ARFID care can move beyond standardized protocols toward more individualized approaches. When treatment prioritizes relational safety, autonomy, and accessibility, clinicians may begin to see greater ease with food and nourishment while supporting more sustainable engagement in care.

The session will conclude with a Q&A, offering clinicians the opportunity to discuss clinical challenges, reflect on their experiences in practice, and deepen their understanding of adult ARFID treatment.
